Nevzat Sayın’s Architecture Lecture Series Concludes
Revisiting Architectural Education Through the Silahtarağa Example
The four-week architecture lecture series by master architect Nevzat Sayın, inspired by the book What Is To Be Done? published in collaboration between Kastamonu Entegre and Yapı Kredi Publications, has been successfully completed. Held throughout November, the sessions offered a renewed perspective on the relationship between architectural education and the knowledge of making, guided by Sayın’s insights.
As one of the leading figures in architectural culture, Nevzat Sayın conducted this four-week lecture series, which drew inspiration from What Is To Be Done? published by Yapı Kredi Publications with the support of Kastamonu Entegre. The lectures provided an opportunity to re-examine the connection between architectural learning and production experience.
The Nevzat Sayın Architecture Lecture Series took place over three sessions at Yapı Kredi Culture and Arts Center, with the final session hosted at Kastamonu Entegre’s Headquarters, a building designed by Sedad Hakkı Eldem and Hayri Şensoy.
Sessions opening different pathways in architecture
Entitled “Looking Inside”, “Transforming”, “The Story of 4-6”, and “Making the Book of Building”, the gatherings engaged a wide audience ranging from students to young professionals, offering a platform to discuss diverse dimensions of architecture.
In his lectures, Nevzat Sayın centered his narrative on the transformation process of the Silahtarağa Power Plant, emphasizing that architectural education should not be limited to drawing alone, but must also be grounded in production processes, experience, and applied knowledge. Highlighting the distance created by computer-based production in education, he underlined that hands-on knowledge remains a fundamental element of architecture.
