Three Books, One Architect: Nevzat Sayın’s Architectural Journey Told Through Books

Three Books by Nevzat Sayın Soon to Meet Readers

Turkey’s leading brand in the wood-based panel industry, Kastamonu Entegre continues to support the worlds of architecture and arts and culture through various projects. Three books authored by one of Turkey’s most prominent architects, Nevzat Sayın, will soon meet readers on June 12. Among them is “How Is to Be Done?”, a brand-new work being published for the first time, alongside two earlier volumes that reflect the trajectory of Sayın’s architectural practice: “Dreams Thoughts Works - 1990-2004” and “Thoughts/Works - 2004 - 2018”.

Through these publications, Kastamonu Entegre aims to contribute to the professional development of young architects, promote architectural culture, and support intellectual creation. By championing the dissemination of knowledge and fostering the future of architecture, the company continues to create lasting impact within the architectural community.

“What Is to Be Done?”

In “What Is to Be Done?”, Sayın draws attention to the disconnection between architectural theory and construction knowledge, presenting a compelling argument that architecture is not merely a design practice, but also a form of “know-how.” In this book, the skilled architect focuses on the transformation of boiler houses 4-6 at SantralIstanbul campus into a faculty of architecture and a library, detailing the journey of the structure from design to construction. The book emphasizes that architecture involves not only intellectual but also physical production. Serving as a guide for young architects, the work shares practical insights into the building process and seeks to enhance professional expertise through the transfer of real-world experience.

“Dreams Thoughts Works - 1990-2004”

Bringing together architecture’s imaginative journey with documents, drawings, and projects, “Dreams Thoughts Works - 1990-2004” offers a comprehensive perspective on Nevzat Sayın’s architectural philosophy, project processes, and professional experiences. The projects featured in the book highlight a process-oriented approach to architectural thinking, showcasing a wide range of buildings in detail - from the Colossus Hotel to Gallery Apel, and from Yahşibey Houses to various school, park, and factory buildings.

“Thoughts/Works - 2004-2018”

“Thoughts/Works - 2004-2018” takes Aydın’s architectural journey a step further and explores the intersection of thoughts and works, telling about how theoretical architectural thought materializes into tangible structures from a multidimensional perspective. The book delves into major projects such as SantralIstanbul Campus, Izmir Opera House, Tepe Narlife Residential Complex, and Ataşehir Finance Center. Reflecting an approach to architecture that is thoughtful, inquisitive, and productive, the work invites readers into the deeper layers of architectural practice.

Appealing to a broad readership from aspiring architects to seasoned professionals, “What Is to Be Done?”, “Dreams Thoughts Works - 1990-2004” and “Thoughts/Works - 2004-2018” will be available on shelves under the sponsorship of Kastamonu Entegre and the imprint of Yapı Kredi Publications.
